2022, Sound furniture
In my former flat, my elderly neighbour had his couch in the same spot as I did. Every evening – around 6pm when I finished my work – I would sit down on my couch and I could hear him walk over and sit down on his. Around this time of the day I would hear my neighbour express tired but comfortable yawns, which were suddenly very audible from behind me through the wall. At first disconcerting, with time these regular yawns became very comforting, and began to signal “the end of work” for me.
Recording my own voice, yawns, comfortable mutters all expressed after long days of work in the studio – I wish to pass on this experience to others. In this unseeming armchair the vibrations of my voice can not only be heard but also felt physically, in a way creating a strong sense of intimacy with the stranger heard through the chair.
